After the end of EU subsidies for tobacco growing in 2010, farmers and processing companies in the Palatinate (Germany) switched to cultivating herbs. The German state of Rhineland Palatinate co-financed a herb drying facility, established by a former tobacco processing plant.
Farmers from the area of Herxheim-Hayna formed the association Erzeugergemeinschaft Pfalzkräuter to sell e.g. parsley, dill, and coriander to the herb processing plant. The freshly harvested herbs are dried, processed and packed for sale.
